Nifty Nutrition with Skill Integration Activities

"Nifty Nutrition" is a nutrition education program designed for grades K-6. The program includes the "Nifty" lessons and Skill Integration Activities which support the lesson. "Nifty Nutrition" provides sequential learning experiences; integrates "hands-on" food experiences with language arts, reading and math skills while teaching nutrition concepts; encourages children to accept a wide variety of foods and to gain a foundation of healthy eating habits.

The "Nifty Nutrition" Program provides teachers the opportunity to use food and nutrition information to teach basic skills, application of knowledge, higher order and critical thinking. A teacher guide for each grade level includes lesson plans, handouts, audiovisuals, posters, food experiences and optional skill integration activities. The skill integration section includes a matrix identifying the SAT 9 objectives and skills covered in each lesson and activity.

Teachers who participate in the "Nifty Nutrition" Program receive in-service on the use of the "Skills Integration Activities" and the "Nifty Nutrition" lessons.

"Nifty Nutrition" provides important nutrition concepts which once learned will influence a student’s dietary choices for the rest of their lives. This program when integrated with other components of the comprehensive school health process will make a vital connection between the classroom and cafeteria for student learning experiences.

The "Nifty Nutrition" lessons were produced through a NET grant by the Little Rock School District, Foodservice and Nutrition Department. The Skills Integration Activities were developed and copyrighted by Jeannette Bennett. You may review a complete listing of Acknowledgement and Credits.
