Introduction
NUTRITION EDUCATION FOR SIXTH GRADE
The major objectives of the program are
to provide opportunities by which students will:
- Develop language arts, reading, and math skills while learning science,
health, and nutrition concepts,
- Accept a wide variety of foods as a result of positive nutrition
education experiences at school,
- Gain a foundation of healthy eating habits that will promote their
optimum physical and mental development and provide a basis for prevention of
health-related problems.
The topics emphasized at grade levels are:
Fourth Grade Energy/Nutrition/Digestion
Fifth Grade Respiratory/Circulatory/Skeletal/Muscular Systems
Sixth Grade Cell Biology/Nutrition
These programs are a joint effort of food service staff and
classroom teachers. The guide is based on the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans. It
coordinates lesson plans, audio-visuals, skill integration activities, and food
experiences.
There are three integral parts of each
lesson.
- Presentation of the nutrition education information and material by the
teachers.
Skill integration activities
A hands-on food experience for the students.
Active involvement of students with food is essential. Scheduling food
experiences and procedures particular to each school are established by the food service
manager and the teacher/leader for each grade level.

3. Growth & Development:
Building a Body From Cells |
The four characteristics of living cells are:
1. Living cells grow and have a life span. 2. Living cells respond to their environment.
3. Living things can reproduce. 4. Living cells need energy. Protein is the body building
nutrient found in every living cell. Protein rich foods build new cells, repair old cells
and supply some energy. |

4. Body Systems: Calories Count |
Body systems are made up of organs which work
together for a common purpose. Organs are made from tissues and tissues are made of cells.
All of our body systems need the energy supplied by food to work at their maximum. The
three nutrients that supply energy for our bodies are fats, carbohydrates, and protein. |
